Tl dr: dew point is the temperature that water particles in the air loose enough energy that they condense more than they evaporate. The temperature that this happens at is the dew point. If you dropped the temperature enough that water particles were condensing as quickly as they were evaporating you would have 100% humidity. Keep in mind water particles can fall out of the air and into the glass in the same way they were popping out. That can happen billions and billions of times over night and by morning the glass will be dry.įor evaporation to happen you would need more water particles to evaporate than condense. The energy of those collisions might be enough to make a water particle fly out of the glass and into the air. They might bump into the drops of water you left in your glass on your nightstand. If you had air at room temperature, air particles are bouncing around quite a bit. Any dew point readings above 70F are oppressive and even deadly, reminiscent of the humid conditions in the tropics or during a scorching summer heatwave. When the dew point rises beyond 60F, it becomes humid and uncomfortable when it rises above 65F. After all, that's what heat is - fast moving particles. A dew point between 55F and 60F indicates that it is humid. It’s muggy when the dew point is above 60F, and it’s uncomfortable outside when it ticks above 65F. Water will boil at that temperature (at a normal pressure) but evaporation has to do with how fast a particle is moving. A dew point between 55F and 60F is noticeably humid.
You might be thinking "water needs to be at 100 degrees Celsius to evaporate" but that isn't true. Water, in gaseous form, will mix with air particles. The heat in the warm air causes water to evaporate. I don't know if you'd call it a misconception, but hot air doesn't 'hold' moisture.
